At the very heart of WEAV is a deep commitment to equal opportunity in education and the workforce. To educate is to empower and give greater voice to girls and women, their families, and the nation. Three programs are interwoven at the village level to foster gender equity.
Girls’ Education
Keeping girls in school is especially critical for economically-challenged communities. A family’s inability to pay tuition beyond the elementary school years is prevalent in most of the developing world. To address this gender inequality, WEAV awards scholarships to keep girls in junior and senior high schools and offers college scholarships on the basis of need and merit. Delta women especially its ethnic minorities are among the most under-represented at the undergraduate level in Vietnam. WEAV has added three new school districts in the Mekong Delta to expand more educational opportunities to these deserving girls.
Keeping a Delta girl educated for one year is equivalent to the cost of dinner for two in the U.S.!!! So why not give the gift of education today to one of these young girls!!
At right: Getting to school sometimes requires crossing naturally made bridges and tributaries, and there are thousands of them in the Mekong Delta. The typical mode of transportation to school is the bicycle and the occasional boat.
Mentorship
WEAV believes that mentoring programs are critical to keep girls from dropping out of school. Mentoring builds confidence, develops study skills, and gives positive feedback during this critical adolescent period. Research has shown that mentoring is a cost-effective intervention for school retention and academic success. Mentors will be effective role models for the adolescent girls. Research has also demonstrated that the process gives “voice” to the mentors and mentees and has cascade effects in the family and community and across generations.
WEAV Country Director Dr. Dang Thi Ngoc Lan is working closely with high school girls to encourage them to develop more effective study skills, instill the importance of goal setting, and promote awareness of educational opportunities through Women’s Empowerment and Voice.
Plans are underway with WEAV colleagues at Hoa Sen University to design and disseminate structured national mentoring programs throughout Vietnam.
Workforce training
Since its inception, WEAV volunteers in Cai Tac province have been working with women micro-loan recipients to build business skills. Seventy businesses have been created through microloans of $100-$250. Each year several new women’s businesses are created as the microloans are paid back to WEAV.
By 2017 WEAV will engage in more systematic workforce training of girls and women. Plans to build a WEAV Technology and Training Center will enable our training programs to be more widely available and comprehensive. Proceeds from selling used computer equipment and peripherals will fund WEAV programs. Delta girls and women will apply management and leadership skills in running this social business. Giáo dục cho trẻ em gái
Giữ cho trẻ gái tiếp tục đến trường là điều đặc biệt quan trọng trong các cộng đồng khó khăn về kinh tế. Trong thế giới các nước đang phát triển, một gia đình không có khả năng chi trả học phí cho con học lên hơn bậc tiểu học là điều phổ biến. Nhằm giúp giảm nhẹ sự bất bình đẳng này trong giáo dục, WEAV trao học bổng để trẻ em gái bậc trung học cơ sở và phổ thông được tiếp tục đến trường, và học bổng cấp cao đẳng,đại học trên cơ sở nhu cầu và học lực.

Kềm cặp và đào tạo kỹ năng lãnh đạo
Mạng lưới của WEAV bao gồm hệ thống hỗ trợ tại chỗ thông qua các người kèm cặp giúp cho trẻ em gái và phụ nữ để động viên họ duy trì việc học và tiến bộ. Trẻ em gái đặc biệt cần được động viên để theo đuổi việc học và cần được tham vấn về kỹ năng học tập và cơ hội nghề nghiệp . Sự huấn luyện và kềm cặp rất cần thiết để phụ nữ học được sự tự tin, các kỹ năng học hỏi suốt đời và lãnh đạo.
Lọat bài giảng về sức khỏe phụ nữ và các phương thức can thiệp
Vị thế kinh tế xã hội thấp kém của phụ nữ và chức năng sinh sản khiến họ gặp nhiều nguy cơ đến sức khỏe. Lọat bài nói chuyện về cải thiện sức khỏe phụ nữ nhằm nhấn mạnh quyền sinh sản, sức khỏe bà mẹ và trẻ em, kế họach hóa gia đình, các bệnh lây nhiễm qua đường tình dục ( kể cả HIV/AIDS), dinh dưỡng kém, và các phương thức can thiệp cải thiện sức khỏe hiệu quả ít tốn kém.
Mở rộng hoạt động
Trong năm 2013, WEAV sẽ gia tăng đáng kể số lượng học bổng cho nữ sinh trung học và khởi đầu học bổng dành cho sinh viên cùng với chương trình kèm cặp cho nữ sinh và sinh viên. Chúng tôi sẽ cố gắng xây dựng quan hệ hợp tác với các trường đại học, bệnh viện, tổ chức quốc tế phi lợi nhuận và của chính phủ, các nhóm phụ nữ trí thức và các công ty đa quốc gia.
